Health and safety adviser/auditor for Ministry of Defence | 04.1992 - 10.2020 | Lead Auditor and Safety Adviser as well as the site Health and Safety Manager for the MOD Abbey Wood site with responsibility for 6000 staff. I led on MOD safety policy (Management of Health and Safety in Defence (JSP375)) providing clear and simplified organisation and arrangements. Ensure buy-in and workable solutions when developing policy and strategies by working closely with stakeholders across the whole of the MOD and Defence Agencies as well as external agencies such as the HSE providing MOD input to green and white papers, and engage with Unions in a consultation process. Initiate change to legislation and the Defence regulatory document structure by providing SME support to MOD on all aspects of occupational health, safety and the environment as well as reviewing and commenting on draft documents for other MOD departments. Raise safety awareness and standards through audits, exploring the customers' expectations and where possible providing ideas and solutions to problems that they are already aware of, adopt a flexible approach and develop the audit plan to meet their requirements as well as my own. Enhance the health, safety and wellbeing in the working environment and the business benefits this brings.
Investigate UK tungsten munitions for carcinogenic properties against US counterparts by organising international collaboration research project on the potential health issues appertaining to tungsten munitions with senior representatives of the UK, US, Germany and Netherlands armed forces as well as international suppliers of munitions grade tungsten alloy. Identify an alternative to conducting a repeat of the US £2M two year study on rats by using a PH5.7 solution invitro study at a cost of £20k taking 3 months to identify the sacrificial element in the alloy. Manage several other research projects undertaken by the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory, Universities, and overseas contractors and progress toward target dates. Set staff objectives giving them autonomy in the development of draft policy and guidance against specific quality and time targets to give them ownership of specific subject areas and pride in them having produced the final draft. Review final documents prior to issue to ensure a consistent style is achieved. Manage many emergency evacuations including a bomb threat that required the evacuation of a nursery of circa 60 children and babies.
