I am a Specialist in water hygiene, Legionella, and scald control in a building services environment with specific expertise in the application of the HSE’s ACoP L8, HSG274 Parts 1 to 3 on Legionella management and NHS Estates Health Guidance HTM 04/01 Parts A to C on waterborne pathogen control.

I am a qualified and experienced Authorising Engineer - water. (AE – Water)

I act as Legionella, Pseudomonas, and other waterborne pathogens specialist AE -Water for PFIs, NHS Trusts, Rail Franchises, County Councils, Universities, Government Departments and Housing Associations

I have over 30 years practical and research experience in the field of water treatment and Legionella control and have expertise in the application of Health and Safety Law in this area and have completed the UKAS Assessors and Lead Assessors course to enable external auditing of any health and safety management system.

I have extensive experience in completing Risk Assessments in Large Hospital Buildings.

I formed SMS Environmental Ltd in 2001, the company now employs more than 220 people across 4 branches in the UK.

In 2014 I lead the Risk Assessment Team into becoming one of the few UK Companies to gain UKAS Accreditation to ISO17020 (UKAS Accreditation Number - 8563).

I have led the company to UKAS certification in Quality ISO 9001: 2008, Environment ISO 14001: 2004 and Occupational Health and Safety Management (OHSMS) ISO 45001.

In 2020 I was elected to the Council of the Water Management Society (WMSoc) and despite sit on the WMSoc Membership Committee.

I am certified by the Association of Water Technologies as a Certified Water Technologist (CWT) My areas of expertise include all areas of industrial water treatment including pre-treatment, cooling water treatment, steam boiler water treatment, closed systems, Legionella control, scald control, water regulations compliance and swimming pool water treatment and control.

I offer consultancy services in the field of The Private Water Supplies (England) Regulations 2016 including risk assessment and testing of private water supplies. Other services I offer include risk assessment, sampling, and training.

The Legionella training, I present is City & Guilds Assured and qualifies for CPD points.

I designed a research programme into microbial quality of recovered rainwater in a building services environment and I also acted as workplace supervisor for MSc thesis at Cranfield University.

I have studied extensively nitrate removal from borehole and surface waters, along with iron and manganese removal from drinking water.

In 2010/2011 I sponsored and acted as the Industrial Supervisor of a student through a master’s degree which produced a paper that was published in Sage Journals.
Current projects include working in partnership with University of Manchester Division of Population Health, Health Services Research & Primary Care into the impact of SARS-CoV-2 on Legionella control within building water systems.
