Overview
My experiences as an auditor and trainer, along with my exposure to higher risk industries and the role as a safety and training manager for an underground mining contractor in Africa; gives me unique perspectives and capabilities. My career in OH&S, clearly demonstrates my ability to learn quickly and adapt to meet the needs of the business.
I have dealt with a range of management and systems factors during my time as a safety and training professional. In Africa, I demonstrated adaptability to develop my knowledge and understanding of mechanised mining, dealt with multi-national mining organisations and understood the need to balance operational and OH&S requirements.
I have improved selection and training programmes, shown my willingness to promote innovative processes, been given autonomy to manage audio-visual training development, managed the development and introduction of an occupational health assessment programme and been trusted to analyse and assess companies prior to US 1.5 million dollar investment in simulator equipment.
I firmly believe engagement through consultation and liaison with employees, who are competent and led by a motivated and proactive team of management and supervisors; is the main driver for addressing unsafe behaviours, conditions and fostering a positive safety culture.
Having lead an investigation into a multiple fatality at the construction of a new process plant, I saw the systemic failings within organisations which allowed risk control measures to be compromised.
My aim is to assist organisations to engage with their employees to achieve continuous improvement and develop their management systems to ensure they are effective and integral to delivering success to their business.

Job Title / Description |
Area H&S Advisor |
01.2003 - 06.2008 |
On leaving the army, I joined Hanson Aggregates as one of two H&S Advisors for the SE region. This enabled me to develop myself as a H&S professional, as I had only my experiences from within the military environment. In 2004, the company downsized and I was retained over the more experienced H&S Advisor. Over the years, I worked very closely with staff and management to drive down the accident and incident rates and promote a more positive safety culture. Behavioural safety was the method employed, along with encouraging and assisting the senior management to take a greater and more active role. This was so succesful, that when I left in 2008, the quarrying and asphalt division had not had a lost time injury for 2.5 years and the concrete divisions had only had 3 minor MH injuries over the same period. I had taken on other areas of the business; road surfacing and cement production and had worked hard to integrate them into my preferred way of managing safety, which proved extremely succesful. |
Senior Auditor and Advisor |
06.2008 - 08.2012 |
I was the senior consultant for auditing within the company, but still conducted OHSAS 18001 and the British Safety Council 5 star audit for many companies across the UK and around the world. I managed the QA process for all audit reports and would adjudicate any complaints from clients. I audited and trained in Nigeria, Turkey, Dubai, UAE and India. In 2011, I worked in Zambia with a copper mining company, conducting an investigation into a mutiple fatality and then returned to undertake an audit. They were so happy with my knowledge of the extraction industry and approach to auditing, giving clear and logical advice, that they requested I return for a 6 month attachment. My role was to mentor their H&S team, advise management and improve their safety performance and this completed in March 2012. This attachment was with another H&S professional who is an associate of the British Safety Council, with him working with the smaller mines and furnace whilst I concentrated upon the main site with the open pits, underground mines, smelter, tailings plant, mills and main construction site where a new concentrator was being built. I conducted H&S advisory visits for companies who were preparing for audits. This role was to give guidance on achieving OHSAS 18001 or improving their potential for a succesful 5 star audit. I taught many courses - NEBOSH National General Certificate, IOSH Managing Safely and Working Safely and various level 2 courses. My exposure to various working environments across many industries in various countries has enhanced my competence and management skills, especially when working with companies I am auditing, as it is imperitive I forge an instant relationship with clients. This is easy when giving praise, but always more challenging when raising major non conformances for OHSAS 18001 clients or identifying significant concerns during 5 star audits which will reduce their overall score. |
Group EHS&T Manager |
08.2012 - 06.2017 |
I was the group EHS&T Manager for African Underground Mining Services, a contract underground mining company who supply services to major mining companies in Africa. The company has current operations in Burkina Faso, Ghana and Tanzania, and have also operated in Mali during my employment. Clients during my tenure have included Newmont, Kinross, Randgold, Roxgold, Nantou and Anglo Gold Ashanti. We undertake development and production mining. We employ expatriate EHS&T Coordinators at each site and these are supplemented by national safety officers. We have produced safety and maintenance films which are dubbed into local languages. We employ a Simulator for UG machines and drill rigs and this is used for initial and refresher training. I am also conversant in the use of the Dover Psychometric Skills Assessment system and this is a culture and literacy neutral tool to determine operator skills prior to employment. I have a dedicated trainer who delivers engineering and fitter training to national employees in Burkina Faso and Tanzania. The company attained accreditation as a NEBOSH course provider in 2013 and several courses have been run for the national safety staff. The development of the national employees and especially the safety staff is one of my key responsibilities. I managed the development and implementation of the bespoke safety management system (SMS), which attained OHSAS 18001 certification in 2014. The company has integrated the SMS and environmental system into an IMS management system with a view to considering ISO 14001 certification, so long as it would add value to the business. I have run several management and supervisor training courses, covering OH&S and developed a 2 day course in non-technical skills, which has been delivered to supervisors and management during 2015. We have procured two psychometric systems (learning ability and trainability) and trained the expatriate EHS&T Coordinators in their use. |
