·         Provide strategic and technical advice to ensure site teams are kept abreast of duties and developing trends and assist them to innovate and improve their overall safety performance. 

·         Coach, challenge and support staff to achieve the necessary level of competence and capability to identify and manage HSE risks and achieve continuous improvement in performance and support operational staff to take HSE accountability.
Monitor, review and update all health, safety, environmental and quality policies, procedures and documentation, within the integrated management system.

·         Lead the implementation of initiatives for the improvement of health, safety, environment and quality in the Company.

·         Engage, support and positively influence Directors, Managers and Supervisors to discharge their responsibilities for health, safety and environmental wellbeing of employees and others to whom they have a duty as defined by legislation and Company procedures in our offices and operational sites.

·         Conduct a gap analysis highlighting deficiencies in both the safety management system and processes, developed a strategy for improvement in Occupational Health and Safety with Key performance indicators (KPI) monitored by the board.

·         Manage incident investigations and take the lead role within all investigations into serious incidents. Monitor the quality and effectiveness of reports, ensuring root causes are established and corrective actions and recommendations have been fully implemented.

·         Track incident and accident trends to ensure that management controls remain effective and take appropriate action when areas of actual and potential weakness are identified.

·         Develop and implement an effective inspection and internal audit plan across all areas of the business. Ensure that the SHEQ Team carries out a sufficient level of site inspections and internal audits of processes.

·         Liaise with external bodies including the Health and Safety Executive, Clients and other stakeholders.

·         Provide advice to the Board and the Senior Management team impending strategic and tactical change as required. Support the senior leadership team in a behavioural based leadership approach to management of health and safety.

·         Develop and implement procurement and office, yard/depot audits for direct and indirect subcontractors.

·         Act as a role model at all times in support of the company’s vision, priorities and values.

The Port of Dover gave me exposure to multiple duty holder roles; predominantly acting as the client, but also on occasions as principal contractor, sub-contractor, landlord as well as the Port Authority) working alongside statutory agencies (such as Border Force, Kent Fire & Rescue Service and other external entities) not to mention the Port’s own police force and supply chain. The marine based environment broadened my experience and further developed my understanding of the Port’s operational requirements.

Duties & Responsibilities

·         Involved in a variety of activities ranging from developing and overseeing significant construction projects (which included highways, demolition, heritage structures) to small refurbishment, maintenance, M&E work but also fresh produce storage warehouses.

·         Instrumental in enhancing the Port’s management system by; implementing visual standards so contractors and staff had a simple to understand document, developing schedule of audits, improving incident reporting, working collaboratively with contractors by establishing regular liaison meetings and holding annual safety forums.

·         Implemented a series of HSSE (Health, Safety, Security & Environmental) tours with senior management (including the CEO) to enhance; both management visibility but also shape a positive Health & Safety culture within the organisation.

Cross rail C512 Whitechapel Station refurbishment (Balfour Beatty Morgan Sindall JV) £110 Million,

·                     C512 was a high-profile project which involved the refurbishment of the existing station / platform areas and the construction of 3 access shafts to connect up to the new tunnel platforms, whilst maintaining the underground service without disruption.

Area 4 Highway Maintenance Contract (Balfour Beatty Mott MacDonald JV) £250+ Million

·                     The Area 4 contract consisted of maintenance of the highways throughout Kent & Sussex. It also involved small construction sites for improvement works throughout the counties.

M25 Section 4 (Skanska & Balfour Beatty JV) £5.5+ Billion (Highways)

·                     The M25 was one of the highest profile projects for the enabling of the Olympics and was also the biggest highway project awarded by the Highways Agency. Some of the challenges faced included the interface with members of public, heavy traffic flows and demanding deadlines for the works completion.

Isle of Grain CHP Alstom Power Project £350+ Million (Civil Engineering)

·                     Employed as a manager on the combined heating power project installing a GRP pipeline inside the power station. This included the positioning of 12meter lengths of 2.2meter pipe and laminating it together with resin.

Isle of Grain Expansion Project £1+ Billion (Mechanical Engineering)

·                     The LNG terminal was a COMAH site with some areas of work extremely high risk, working in live plant conditions and also sub stations.
